Why shouldn’t I use my subfloor as storage for items in other areas of the subfloor?

Q: Why shouldn’t I use my subfloor as storage for items in other areas of the subfloor? J.P. – Data Center Manager

A: Any foreign object in a subfloor causes turbulence to airflow causing air patterns that increase needs for more cooling output, lowering ability for controlled air to reach equipment. Debris may also cause complete air blockage creating hot spots and thermo-control issues in the data center. Every 10° rise in temperature lowers your equipment’s MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) by 50%, shortening the life of equipment. [Reference ASHRAE, NFPA Standards & Equipment Manufacturers Best Practices]. It is a good practice to keep the subfloor clear of foreign objects if it is used to supply conditioned air.
